A huge congratulations to ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ student Harry, who recently completed his very first solo flight! Harry began flying lessons on his fourteenth birthday at Yorkshire Aero Club in Sandtoft and has since completed around 16 hours of flight training. After patiently waiting for the right weather conditions, he was finally able to take to the skies on his own.

Harry’s ambition is to become a pilot with the Royal Air Force, and this achievement is a fantastic step towards that goal. We are incredibly proud of his dedication and hard work. Well done, Harry!

Y12 John Locke Institute Essay Competition /2026/06/01/y12-john-locke-institute-essay-competition/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 13:48:06 +0000 /?p=19018

Our Year 12 Economics students have successfully submitted their entries to the prestigious John Locke Institute Global Essay Competition 2026.

The competition challenges students to deepen their subject knowledge, develop their academic writing skills, and construct well-reasoned arguments supported by research and evidence. Entries are assessed by leading academics from world-renowned universities, including Oxford, Harvard, and Princeton.

This year, our students tackled a range of challenging and thought-provoking questions. Harshini and Haidar explored whether Jeff Bezos became wealthy at the expense of his customers or employees. Lola investigated which unintended consequence has been the most devastating and why it was not predicted. Charlie examined whether society should fear a future without cash.

We are incredibly proud of the intellectual curiosity, ambition, and dedication shown by all of our students throughout this process. Taking part in such a prestigious international competition is a fantastic achievement in itself, and we wish them the very best of luck with their entries.

The girls had a brilliant afternoon and represented Wickersley School & Sports College exceptionally well, proving to be a real credit to both themselves and the school. We are incredibly proud of every single one of them for taking part and helping to raise money for such an important cause within the local community. Well done, girls!

Back in March, 11 of our Y12 A-Level Physics students took part in the Senior Physics Challenge from the British Physics Olympiad. The challenge is designed to develop students’ problem-solving skills and encourage them to apply their understanding of Physics to unfamiliar situations. Each year, more than 6,000 students take part in the competition.

The one-hour paper includes a range of short and extended questions that test students’ core subject knowledge, application, and higher-level thinking skills beyond the standard Key Stage 5 curriculum.

We are delighted to share that Charlie, Ed, Ben, and Arfaan all achieved a Commendation Award for their efforts. Grace, Dom, Oliver, Alby, Aman, Judd, and Jack were also awarded Bronze Awards. Well done, everyone!
